Welcome to Nerja · Costa del Sol

Experience Nerja

Nerja is the exception on the Costa del Sol. Where other towns built high-rises, Nerja kept its soul. It sits on a dramatic cliffside where the Sierra Almijara mountains meet the sea — creating a place that feels vibrant, authentic, and undeniably Spanish.

This is not just a beach destination; it is a living town. You walk through historic pedestrian streets, eat tapas in buzzing squares, and find hidden coves right in the center. Staying here means having the ocean at your feet and the Andalusian culture right at your doorstep.

Nerja is famous for the Balcón de Europa, but its real magic happens in the side streets of the Old Town after sunset, when the day-trippers leave and the locals reclaim the plazas.

Why Nerja Feels Different

Unlike its neighbors, Nerja resisted the concrete boom. The result is a town of white houses, palm trees, and open horizons. The geography defines the rhythm here: the town is built on cliffs, creating natural balconies overlooking the Mediterranean.

Life here is outdoors. The "Paseo" (evening walk) is a ritual. The beaches are not just long strips of sand but often sheltered coves (calas) with crystal-clear water, protected by the rock formations.

It is a place of contrasts that work perfectly together: You can hike in the mountains in the morning, eat fresh paella on the beach for lunch, and enjoy sophisticated dining in the Old Town by night — all without ever needing a car.

Río Chíllar Status 2026

⚠️ Access Info

As of March 2026, the Río Chíllar hike remains officially closed. For a similar "walking in water" experience, we highly recommend the Río Higuerón in Frigiliana. It is beautiful, legal, and much less crowded.

Nerja is also the gateway to the famous Nerja Caves and the crystal-clear kayaking cliffs of Maro-Cerro Gordo.
